Default Should my bike be burning oil?

Since my 1000km service I have done just under 4000km on my 2011 bike, mostly short rides to work and back and longer rides over weekends. Since the 1st service I frequently have to top up the oil and have used a whole 1 Litre of oil. My dealer threw in Castrol Power 1 racing 10W-40 and I topped up using the same oil.
Is this normal for my bike to use so much oil or is there reason for concern?

You dont need to worry - let the stealer sort it under warranty .

Really you have to ask if it's alright that your bikes burning oil?

No it's not alright, did you buy a Harley

3200 miles and not a drop of oil used, take it to the dealer for warranty, it's there, use it.

Thanks for the replies.
I agree now too that its not normal for the bike to burn so much oil. So in the mean time I have contacted my dealer and will be taking it in under warranty. Its just something I wouldn't have wanted to do as this means opening up the engine. The bike will never be the same again! :-(

If they won't fix the problem don't add oil until you need a new engine. They'll have to fix it then

My former bike (taken out by an idiot cager) went through about 1/2 liter to 3/4 liter of oil between about 600 miles to 2500 miles. I talked to my local dealer and they told me the engine was likely still breaking in. I had an oil change at about 3000 miles and starting after the oil change I increased the daily rev range to make sure I ran the engine up to at least 11K. From about 3000 miles to 5500 miles the bike only used about 1/4 liter. Guess I was lucky.

Sounds like your bike is going through more oil than mine. My dealer told me that oil use at or more than 1 liter per 1000 miles is excessive and would likely warrant further investigation.

What does the manual say (I haven't got mine here so I can't check myself)?

Normally it should state what the acceptable oil burn is.

If you are concerned you should take it to the dealer and if/when they say that "no, this is normal" you must get a written statement that they have received your warranty claim but that they chose not to act at this time. That way you should be covered for the future if the problem gets worse or if the engine fails on you - even if it happens when the warranty's gone. The date that you report a problem is what counts so it is important that you get it in writing.
