Default Oil filter removal

Is there a way to remove the filter without the special tool?

If not, any idea as to the tool's cost?

Thanks.

There's a chance you can get it off by hand, but probably need at least a generic strap wrench. Or you can be a real hack and drive a screwdriver through it. But don't be a hack.

The official one from BMW will run you $30 or so, but many folks have had good luck taking the new filter into an auto parts store and finding a plastic cup model that fits Okay. They usually cost $7 or so. There's also a couple in the aftermarket. I do think the metal ones are worth the extra dough.

Thanks Mark. I will admit I have resorted to the ol' screwdriver method a time or two when all other options for removal have failed.

Harbor Freight sells a filter removal tool that is basically two big pointy steel crab claws attached to a vise grip handle. I used it to take the OEM filter off and use K&N replacements instead (primarily for the handy safety wire hole, but the nut makes them simple to remove as well).

Now imagine those jaws, but with vice grip handles instead of pliers. More crushing force if needed, and less swing room required.

Yeah, I bought one of these and it works on every vehicle I own.
I think I have at least a half dozen filter wrenches I will never use again.

I prefer a cap wrench, but it's nice to have a weapon of last resort.
