Default Oil Analysis from Blackstone Labs

Just got this report from the lab:

"Since this is only the second oil change for your 1000cc BMW engine (3,359 miles, first at 500 mi.), we expected wear metals to read high (Iron and Copper 2X average). They're from new parts wearing in, and chances are we'll see things drop over the next two or three oil changes. Usually we see high silicon too, from sealers, but that element is already low.
Universal averages show typical wear metals for this engine after about 1,900 miles on the oil. We'll watch the balance of metals to make sure there are no problems developing, but we think this is going to turn out to be an excellent engine for you."

I'm happy with that.

Mack,

I had a Blackstone test kit at my house waiting to be filled and sent in. I have approximately 4400 miles on my bike and have only changed the only so far at the first service around 800 miles. I am curious to see what the finding are.

Not that I have any concern about wear/etc. I am just curious as I have never sent anything in for analysis to them before.

What's the process one goes about to get this done? Do you inquire on their website and they send you a sample kit to send back to them?

1000RR - It's easy.

Visit Blackstone Labs and fill out some info and they mail you your free sample collection kit. Mail the kit back to them and they preform detailed analysis and let you know the results.

The test kit is free, the analysis is $25.

Nice part is they also store your data online and you can access it and compare it to all your old readings to see what is going askew.

It usually takes me about 2-3 weeks to get their analysis email back with a PDF report with the breakdown and comments as well as the online storage file on their server. After a while, they will send you a larger test kit back free as well (I got 4 vials back last time). I generally send in a check for $22.50 and it goes well. Sometimes I have a hard time finding their cost and I've paid as much as $23 too. They don't seem to care though. Takes about 4 postage stamps for me to send it off if I fill the vial 2/3 full. They like electrical tape for the outer cap top's seal too.

I've got a running bank of tests with them on all my bikes including BMW final-drive oils. I'm more concerned with the final drive oil analysis since those $2,200 buggers seem to croak when you least expect it and far away from home too. Last F-D with Amsoil gear oil in it came back better than the prior did with regards to bearing contaminants. Go figger.

I'm sending mine in at my next 5,000 mile oil change which will be 10k miles on the bike. I'm hoping to be able to set my change intervals in between 5 and 6k miles. I also plan to cut the filter open to see if whether or not it can handle that many miles before changing it also.
