Default Checking Clutch Cable freeplay

The owner's manual shows checking clutch freeplay at the end of the cable. It seemed to me that the freeplay at the lever is much easier to check (like every other bike on the planet), but I thought maybe BMW had some reason for what they put in the manual. So, I dutifully tried checking by pulling the cable out, as shown. Not easy

Well, the service manual shows checking freeplay AT THE LEVER, the same 0.5-1.0mm. Easy.

On my bike, anyway, the clutch has a 50% increase in freeplay when the engine is hot, so properly adjusting it was an item of interest.

My lever gets a little looser when it is warm too. Just make sure there is a little bit of freeplay when it is cold--at right and left full turn.

Why worry about it when it is cold? Since it is a characteristic of this bike that it loosens up when warm, I wouldn't worry about the freeplay when it is cold or it will be too loose when warm.

Just adjust it correctly once it is warm and don't worry if it seems a little tight or no freeplay at full lock when it is cold, IMO.

I suspect freeplay is for the function of the slipper clutch.

BMW will undoubtedly know that the play increases when the motor/clutch is hot, just follow their set up procedure when cold, they do know what they are talking about I guess....................
