I'd just say use WD-40 then lube the chain afterwards... I know OTHER folks use Kerosene with good results... again.. lube chain afterwards.

just my 2p

I am a big fan of kerosene and a toothbrush. Never tried paraffin.

I had some guys on a local forum here in England say using WD-40 was bad. I didn't get into an argument about it but they were refering to it as a degreaser saying it would remove the lube and dry out the chain.

We have heard that from many dealers as well.
But, we have hundreds of customers who swear by it. and have been using it for many many years.

One local guy has over 50,000 miles on his 05 R1, using WD-40 with no issues.

I've heard from the local owner of a KTM shop is to not use wax on the chains as it holds dirt and grit and will chew up a sprocket's hard facing in short order. Something about "Would you put sand in your toothpaste?"

What he recommends is nothing but WD-40 and he runs his chains 18,000 miles in the dirt. He says he just soaks a rag in it and wipes it a few a few revolutions and lets it sit overnight and that's about it.

Interesting, that new environmentally green chain cleaner stuff approved in California is 100% Soy Bean Oil. Actually, it worked well getting the thicker stock BMW grease and muck off the chain (just did a 2000 mile cleaning of the stock stuff). Lots of grit came off that waxy stock chain too.
