9k RPM limit removal
Of those of you who did your own service, how many had to pay the dealer to have the 9k RPM limit removed?
Did anyone’s dealer perform this service as a courtesy?

My dealer has it as part of the first service. DIYs have to pay to have the dealer remove it.

Your supplying dealer normally does the first service labour free and removes the 9K limit at the same time, you just pay over the top for the parts, my first service was about £70 from memory, not worth the hassle of doing it yourself to save £30 and cause hassle should any warranty issues arise.

It turns out that the dealers in my area (California) charge about $250USD for the first service, and resetting the rev limiter is included. It's really not about the cost of the service, I really prefer to do this myself, and have do so for many years.
The problem I'm having is that they want to charge me $120USD for removing the 9k RPM limit. As far as I'm concerned this is something that has been imposed by BMW, and should be covered under warranty. I shouldn't have to pay extra just so the bike performs up to the advertised specification. Especially since this was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase.
Ultimately I will have to pay to have this completed. It just really bothers me.

Man, you got reamed.
Mine, also in California, was $140, but that also included the $33 BMW bobbin installation too as well as the 9K removal.
I would have paid around $105 without the bobbins, but they just got them in when I showed up for the service and I said, "Bolt 'em on."

I did my first service and only took the bike to the dealer for limiter removal. They did it for free, invoice said WARRANTY.

DIYs should not have to pay and should refuse to pay.

I've been in contact with BMW NA, but they seem unwilling to do anything about this issue.
I really like the bike, and it's a blast to ride, but I'm not too happy with BMW NA or the dealership.

BMW NA will stay out of what the dealer charges for stuff, and most other stuff too. The only thing BMW NA seems to get really involved in is "How much work and which parts the dealer will install on a warranty claim." They run that show pretty much on their own in my experience. The dealers are all over the place on prices and one in the Bay area was up to $110/hr. plus some additional hourly rates if anything was added to your bike that required them "To think" like extra wires or farkles added that wasn't done by a dealer. Really sort of put me off a bit.
Warranty issues can be a bit disconcerting at times with some dealers. Others will put your bike to the back of the line for a month should any patrol bikes show up where they have some state contract to do them first. I can see why as they will bill for those as many are not warranty related like tires, crashes, bent rims, general service, etc. where they get maximum dollars over a warranty claim.
My saving grace once was another dealer who offered to pick my bike up from another dealer 400 miles away (one-way!) who was dragging their feet on my warranty and trailer it back to his shop to fix. His assistant called me one day at work and asked "If I had gotten my bike fixed yet?" When I said "No. It was just sitting there." things moved fast. She even filed the warranty paperwork to speed them up, and then she put me in contact with her boss who called me with the 'trailer offer' which about knocked me out of my chair, as it did the BMW NA rep who I also called on the slow dealer (I was getting very pissed waiting for them to get to it after the third week) and it floored him too. Needless to say which dealer I bought the S from, but then he also has an "Outstanding Service" plaque in his shop from Corporate and I can figure out why too (farthest one north in CA fwiw).
Unfortunately, part of BMW ownership is figuring out the good dealers from the bad and how they go to bat for you. High employee turnovers are not a good sign, and some multi-line ones often have their personal preferences and BMW, unfortunately, may not be one of them.
