Default 6,000 service

Just dropped my bike for the 6,000 miles service. Thanks to firearmsdoc for reminding me in another post that the service is at 6,000 and not 6,500 miles.

Has anyone gone through that service yet, if so, how much did they end up paying, were they told anything interesting, is there any firmware upgrade, etc...

The service light came up when I started the bike (with 5,980 miles on it). The dealer told me that it was a good thing that the light came up as they can only reset it once it has come up. So I guess bringing the bike for service with 5,950 miles would still have you come back to get the warning removed when you reach 6,000 miles.

I use the bike half on the track and half on the street and usually do an oil change after 3 or 4 track days (ends up being every 1,500 miles or so) so I had done the last one less than 500 miles ago. The dealer told me that in that case they would not do the oil change part of the 6,000 miles service (which made me quite happy). I use the Motul 300V 4T 5W40 and a dealer performed oil change is always a ripoff.

The 3 problems I've had with the bike in its first 4 months have been as follow :

Happened at 5,700 miles - One of the two screws/bolts that hold the kick stand broke loose and fell off. The kickstand is now held by only one screw and I had to tighten it every day until service as the whole assembly (including the electrical switch would rotate and unscrew the remaining screw/bolt when I retracted the kick stand). People might want to check the torque on these two bolt as it's been a real pain and I almost dropped my bike because of it. That will be under warranty.

Started around 5,000 miles - The switch on the clutch lever works half of the time, so half the time the bike won't start at all unless in Neutral and I can't switch modes while riding (even with clutch pulled and off the throttle). That will be under warranty.

Happened around 4,500 miles - The fan stopped working and I changed the fuse that was blown. It's been fine since but the dealer will look at it (warranty as well for diagnostic and if any actual problem).

In other words, really minor things and I have really been loving the bike. I have done 6,000 miles on that bike since March 15th and still have not reached 5,000 miles on a Ducati 1098 bought close to two years ago.

How would you compare the two bikes?
Why do you ride the BMW more than the Duc?

buying the GS-911 tool, and unless something happens that needs to be fixed under warranty or there is a recall something. will not be back to the dealer until 16K for valve adjustment.

I love to ride the S1000RR both on the streets and on the track. The 1098 I like only on the track and I don't really trust it mechanically to take it on long rides.

I used to have a K1200R that I traded in for the S1000RR so the K was my street bike and the 1098 my track bike. (I took the K1200R to the track once and had a lot of fun but the height of the footpegs was such that I was dragging metal the whole time).

As for track use, the 1098 has crazy torque everywhere (V-Twin) so it's a little easier to ride in terms of being on the right gear. The S1000RR requires to be in the right gear out of turns (at least at 8 or 9,000rpm) but if you're there, nothing catches up to it and the power rush is crazy. I also find the S1000RR to be sooo much easier to turn than the ducati, it flicks really really easy. The only thing I like a lot better on the Ducati beside the looks and sound is the front brakes. Honestly no comparison with the BMW, the 330mm rotors and monoblocks calipers are really sick.

Great feedback, I think you managed to sum up everything in those few lines of text.
