Default BMW Oil?

Wondered if anyone knew what oil they put in the bike? I usually change mine after the first 100miles as this is when most of the running in is done, then the usual 600/1000/3000/5000/7000 etc schedules.

Have been using Castrol GPS 10-40 in my Blade which has been great, but would be interested to know what BMW are using. I haven't been into the dealer as yet to ask.

This is what the Owner's Manuals states:

Engine oil, capacity 3.9 l, with filter change

Products recommended by BMW Motorrad and generally admissible viscosity classes:
Castrol Power 1 Racing SAE 5W-40 ~-20 °C
SAE 5W-40 ~-20 °C
SAE 10W-40 ~-20 °C

Engine oil, quantity for topping up max 0.8 l, Difference between MIN and MAX
Oil grades Engine oils of API classification SJ or better. Engine oils of JASO classification MA2 or better.

Typically, all BMW bikes ship with thin "running in" oil. This bike is a pretty radical departure from tradition for BMW, so who knows. I know I will getting the first service done on schedule to be sure

I believe that the oil that they suggest is synthetic. So the bike needs the synthetic oil after the first 1000km.

Guys its no bullshit all sythetics are NOT the same ( family in oil Business before ) Synthetic oil is actually oil. It is regular oil put into a centrifuge and the long molecules are separated from the short . AMSOIL cost 10$ a quart but is 100% synthetic and has been rated the best from every independant labratory ive seen .

Ps ive always read you use regular oil to seat rings/pistons/ valves ect for 500 to 1000 miles . Then use the synthetic . It does make sence

The K12S and R as well as the new 13s can have synthetic oil put in at the first oil change--600 miles. It will probably be the same for the S1000RR. I will update when I go to training but I am not sure when that will be exactly--late Jan at the earliest I would guess.

That is correct. In the piston aviation business (where a failed engine can ruin your day), straight mineral oil is used. Now there is a difference here, since we are talking about a liquid cooled engine and aviation engines are generally air cooled.

Nothing generates more controversy and misinformation than engine oils. People get Phd's in this stuff. I've seen folks who "know" arguing with research chemists from the major brands. This stuff becomes a religion.

As an engineer, my advice is to stick to what the manufacturer recommends, unless you've got 20 years experience in engine oils.

Spoke to another dealer on Thursday, said no problems if I want to change the oil more often, long as I keep the service book stamped for the warranty. Will be using the Castrol Power 1 Racing mentioned earlier.
