Default Oil's

Just wondering if I could get some help here with what brand of oil I should use in my bike (s1000rr). I always ride in weather no less that 50 degrees up to 90 degrees. I had my breakin service done at the dealer but they are 2 hrs away. Could I get some ideas on brands and weights. It has Castrol racing syn 5w 40 but I cant get that anywhere by me. Thanks for your help.

Got a Walmart nearby? Pick up a gallon of Rotella T6. It's an excellent synthetic and very cheap. Tons of racers use it and love it.

I bought 4ea - 4L jugs (4.2Q) CASTROL OIL POWER RS R4 5W40 - $36ea (plus shipping) for $158 Total. Which is about $9.34 per Quart (incl. shipping) - not too bad.

Got em at PowersportSuperstore.com

It has the JASO-MA2 rating which the manual references...

Here's a thread on oil choices --> Choice of engine oil

That is not entirely correct. Shell XHVI is a highly refined slack-wax base stock, and is used in all of Shell's high-performance oils, including those used in F1 racing. XHVI, although classified as Group III, is not made from distilled crude - it really is a pure synthetic oil, and is certainly not a blend. Its properties meet or exceed those of competitive PAO base stocks. When combined with an excellent additive pack like that found in Rotella-T6, you get a truly superior motorcycle oil. The T6 formula includes JASO-MA certs, which means that it's been tested for compatibility with wet clutches.

Use of Rotella-T Synthetic will not void your warranty, and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents the requirement to use branded oil.

I raced for years using Rotella-T synthetic, and gave up doing oil analyses because they were consistently perfect, despite the extreme operating environment. If I did not currently have Royal Purple sponsorship, I'd still be using it in my race bikes. I use it every day on the street in my commuter bikes and in my cars. Again, it is excellent stuff.

I have been using T6 in several of my bikes with no problems (as well as Mobil 1 bike-specific oils).
However.....
I do wonder if NOT using a JASO MA2 spec rated oil )which is currently only being offered by Castrol, IIRC), leaves a legal loophole for a manufacturer to wiggle out of any potential engine/trans claims down the road. I am not sure what the differences between JASO MA and MA2 are, at this point.

I am w/you on that.... I looked and looked and found talk about the two... and actually three now I guess. Apparently the JASO MA is the old rating (some still use) and now they've gone to JASO MA1 and JASO MA2... From all accounts, for bikes, it sounds like you should NOT use JASO MA1... stick with the JASO MA2. Nothing I read really spells it out explicitly... so FWIW, since I found the RSR4 for a decent price, I figured I'd just go w/it. Plenty of great oils out there though.

JASO-MA is a superset of JASO-MA2, and as long as you don't encounter any performance issues (and T6 hasn't had any issues), MA oils should be suitable for use in your wet clutch application.
