1. I plan to do all my own changes now that the obligatory first service is done. The outrageous cost imposed by the dealer left a bitter taste; now easily remedied via home oil and filter changes, and annual servicing at a friendly non-BMW workshop.

2. I generally halve the recommended distance. Therefore it will be changes (inc. filter) at 5000km intervals. That will also work out to 6 months. For me it's kind of an equation which includes: total km ridden, time inside the engine, number of punishing heat cycles. If both BMW and Castrol recommend 10 000km, I figure anything more frequent than 5 000km is wasting my time and money. Now if I was racing the thing every weekend that'd be a totally different story.

....That you're wasting your money, but it's your money so it doesn't bother me one bit.

I'm kind of in the same camp, change the oil every 2000. If your running the engine up in RPM you should consider smaller intervals.

I've bought so much $hit for my bike, some would say that is wasting money too. Maybe so, but I like it I have my service indicator set to come on in another 2K miles (just changed the oil). I anticipate I'll probably put about 2K on a year, so in essence it'll be once a year for me. I changed it twice in the first 600 miles... once at about 200 then again at 600. The change at 200 had MUCH more sparklies in it than at 600. Not sure how much it matters in the long run, but it made me feel better getting that stuff out sooner than later (i.e. well before the 600 mile mark). Did I waste money... IMO - nah... it made me happy... and we all spend money at points in our lives to make ourselves happy

You can never change the oil TOO much......no way it can hurt the bike, only your wallet. I change it every 2,500 - 3,000. If you can afford it, go for lesser intervals if you are so inclined.
