Default Choice of engine oil

For the DIYers, what brand/weight of engine oil are you using? Are people sticking with the recommended Castrol Power 1 Racing 5w-40? Anyone contemplating a viscosity change for the northern summer (10w-40)? And for track-only bikes are you changing to a full racing oil (5w-30)?

Here in Oz we can get the recommended Castrol readily and cheaply, so I'll probably continue with this. Some of the 'elite' oils (Rockstar, Fuchs etc) are more than twice as expensive. I figure that BMW used Castrol throughout the extensive year-long tests and that they would hardly endorse an inferior product when the bike was released to the general public.

The bike oil purists will go ape, but I'm probably going with Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 full synthetic bought for $4.50/qt at Walmart which now has the wet-clutch-friendly JASO-MA rating.

I was going to do that, but BMW says to use oil w/the new JASO-MA2 rating... and since I could never fully conclude what the difference is, I'm just sticking w/the JASO-MA2 rating.

I bought some CASTROL OIL POWER RS R4 5W40 online which exceeds the JASO-MA2 rating (according to their specs/description).

I started using AMS Oil on my MV's, Amsoil claim gearbox advantages over their competitors.

My bikes gear change went slightly worse after it's oil change at first service, they used Castrol 10/40, I have since changed it at 1000miles to Amsoil MCF 10/40

Maybe it's just a mileage thing but at 1300 miles my bike has now got a real sweet gear change, I don't even think about gearchanges anymore, it changes spot on with or without the quickshift, up,or down the box, chuffed

I pretty much did the same except with Red Line 10W-40 motorcycle oil at 1200 miles. It didn't really shift any worse after the first service but it shifts way better after putting the Redline in.
