Default OIL???

i know there are A MILLION OIL THREADS but i have a few questions i think you guys would have the answer to and would help me decide here.. sooo i got my 600 mile service done, they swapped break in oil and replaced with " bmw oil" as i was told & stupid me didnt really think to ask questions(the oil nut i am) just wanted that limter off very bad. so i did do some research and i see people using 5w-40 full syth or 10 w 40 full syth brands after brands (no semi syth?)..(can i use semi syth as i tend to ride the bike hard?) i would really appreciate opinions based on what some of you use. i intend to change my oil at 1000-2000-3000-5000-7000 ect. i ride her pretty hard sometimes and often in some traffic here in NYC. the summers also heat up to 90+ . as of my knowledge in oils, i allways used royal purple or mobil 1 4t... i just started getting into the viscosity of oils at certain temp and how when bubbled up at a high temp really isnt to good. basicly which ever oil bubbles at the higest temp is better oil i have heard. correct me if i heard wrong.

thanks!

If you are going to change your oil that much, it makes no difference what brand of oil you use.

ALL internal combustion engines burn oil. As oil is bring left on the cylinder walls is being burned, gasoline is being squeezed past the rings into the oil sump. So the longer your leave oil in the more gas is in the oil. The more gas you have in your oil the less protective it becomes an breaks down faster.

Changing your oil every thousand miles is excessive, but your oil will never break down enough to matter, do it makes no difference what you put in it.

Well I go every 3500 miles and I believe its more than enough if you do not race the bike.

our bike is for race use only and we use motul 300v full synthetic, the last race we did it was 100deg air temp all day, after draining oil it still looked good with no metal filings on the drain plug, i am anal about my oil and i change it every race meeting, i dont think you can change your oil too often (other than the cost)

LOL. It must be a lot easier to get rid of used oil in NYC then here in Washington. Heck the recycle fees are as much as the oil here just about.

You can recycle used oil for free at any autozone, if you go to the county's site you'll be charged

BMW recommends a full synthetic oil... I'd recommend sticking with that. If you have an engine problem, god forbid, you don't want to give the BMW warranty folks something in addition to be able to blame. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind IMO. I use Motul 300V and change out about every 2,000 miles. Overkill? Yes... but it is peace of mind at the same time and I get a great deal on Motul.

Ditto that... in fact all my bikes get Motul 300V. My R6 race bikes, my S1, my dirt bikes...

I drop the oil out of the race bikes every third day of fuse (275-325miles)... I'll ship to you, just pay shipping I've already given some away to another guy local. I sometimes use the old stuff in my lawnmower and snowblower. I hate to dump the oil but on a race bike you absolutely don't to take chances.

IMO you're wasting your time and money changing your oil that ofter on a street bike. (my assumption, you didn't mention racing).
