Angry Steering head nut

Trying to change my clip ons and ok I consider myself to be fairly mechanical. However am I just a big puss (rehtorical! dont answer that) or is there a special technique to get the 36mm nut off the top triple tree? Maybe I need a 3 foot cheater bar. I am frustrated and about ready to take an impact wrench to it. There is a small slot on the side of the nut. Is there something in there that needs to be knocked out? I don't want to mess the thing up. Anyone else run into this? Suggestions? Thanks

It's just a standard thread nut. Put a little tape on the nut to prevent the socket from leaving any marks. BTW it's torque spec is 120nm (88 ftlb) Here's a helpful post Torque Specs

The worst that can happen is you'll have to buy a new nut.
