Default Question about Frame Inserts

Hi all,

Maybe some of you BMW mechanics or race prep guys can help me out.

I had a low side at the track this last fall, and when I went to replace the right side frame slider I noticed the un-threaded "bushing" in the frame was split. I can't tell if the fall did it, or it comes split like this.

Here is what it looked like:

There are some rough edges on the frame, but the frame itself looks OK. (I took the gilled siding off and took a good look at it then).

Here is a parts schematic of the front frame. I've pointed out the two pieces that look like they are designed to be replaced if needed.

Part 10 is called a "Ball Element" and part 11 is called an "Expander Sleeve".

Does anybody know if my sleeve is OK or whether the sleeve can be easily replaced without removing the engine if needed? The REPROM suggests it can come out with the bolt. Would it normally slip out the right side or is it pressed in, or how is the ball element involved with it?

Thanks for any experienced insight.

In looking at the crude schematic, it almost looks like the expander sleeves are split. Maybe I'm OK?

And I thought I was the only one wrenching on by bike on New Years Eve. Well I did get an hour ride in on it to in the 46 deg weather.

Found an answer to this in the REPROM in the section about reinstalling the engine.
  • Insert taper elements (3) with the taper to the outside.
  • Install expander elements (2), drilled side in and slot (arrow) to the rear and down.
  • Install screws (1) and tighten until hand-tight.
  • Tighten the screws in the specified sequence.
Somehow my slot is pointing straight up, but it's OK to be slotted - it's not cracked. I'll readjust the slot then button it back up. Whew.
