OEM here, no real reason other than they're easy to order online.

Just my experience that OEM oil filters are not necessary for warrantee issues/claims. If the manufaturer requires a specific brand to validate warrantee, they have to provide it free. K&N even has this info posted on their website: Letter from K&N CEO - Automotive Dealers Voiding a Warranty due to a K&N Replacement Filter

As for my personal issue, I had a Triumph Daytona 675 engine spin a rod bearing due to low oil while it was still under warrantee. At first, the dealer said the warrantee was void due to my use of a non Triumph branded oil filter, which I quickly mentioned the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and was then told they'd get back to me ASAP. A few days later, they said Triumph was covering the spun rod bearing under warantee. Several months later I had a completely rebuilt engine with all new internals at no charge and told if it the engine failed in another 24 months they'd cover it again. I never had to file another claim on that engine.

Exactly... I agree with and am aware of everything you mentioned... my position is that in my slightly older age, I just don't find it worthwhile to fart around with the OEM vs. aftermarket to save a couple bucks but potentially go through that battle. Hell, I'm running a fully Akra, PCV, AutoTuner, and BMC Race filter... so I guess I have other things to worry about when it comes to warranty, eh

eh, indeed!

I find it more interesting with my S1000RR purchase from the "well known school in CA" that BMW supposedly has a more limited warrantee on those bikes (one now owned by me) that supposedly any engine failure probably won't be covered by the normal warantee due to the bike's previous known use on the track. I don't have anything in writing stating as such, but was told by the fleet manager that was the deal. Several others that I know who also bought one of the fleet bikes thinks its odd that BMW would limit the warrantee when they actually promote use of the bike on the track. Hell, just look at the owners manual and it tells you everything you need to do to put the bike on the track! Go figure! I really don't anticipate having any warantee issues with the BMW though. Famous last words, eh?
