Wow, that sucks! I met him at Mid-Ohio the year after he won his MotoGP title, and he was the nicest guy. I have a pic with him and my 2 kids, he was very happy to socialize with us. He was there to cheer Tommy on in AMA SBK.
Hope he recovers fully and soon! Also hope the motorist is held accountable if that was his fault.
Not always. The coma is there to help reduce the swelling of his brain. If the swelling continues and gets any worst they would have to open his skull to let the inflammation continue. I would hope they are closely monitoring his vitals signs during this process. Once the swelling goes down then they can start dealing with the other injuries.
"Traumatic brain injury (TBI): A TBI is also called a head injury, brain injury, or acquired brain injury. In TBI, a sudden event damages the brain. Both the physical contact itself and the quick acceleration and deceleration of the head can cause the injury. The most common causes of TBI include falls, vehicle crashes, being hit with or crashing into an object, and assaults. The initial injury can cause brain tissue to swell. In addition, broken pieces of bone can rupture blood vessels in any part of the head. The body's response to the injury may also increase swelling. Too much swelling may prevent fluids from leaving the brain."
at a lose for words. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family. By far one of my favorite riders, just the way he carries himself and how he represents the sport in such a great way.
I had been in a medically induced coma for 27 days. If they give you x amount of morphine for pain they will but you in a coma so they can stuff tubes down your throat to keep you breathing. Lots of morphine and your lungs stop working .
Valentino Rossi paid a glowing tribute to his former team-mate Nicky Hayden and said "we are all with you"
"Nicky was one of the best friends I had in the paddock. We were team-mates at Honda when he was a rookie in 2003, when he was a youngster getting his first experience in Europe.
"That season ended with the world title for me and his first podium in Phillip Island. A few years later we faced each other for the 2006 world title down to the wire and eventually, unfortunately for me, he beat me.
"He did it and became the MotoGP world champion. After that race we shook hands and hugged.
"Later we became team-mates again in the difficult years of Ducati, when we fought hard just to get in the top five.
"Nicky used to visit me at the Ranch, where he was spectacular and interesting to watch in order to get some of his secrets while we were battling, because he is one of the fastest flat track drivers in the world and before switching to tarmac he had won the most important flat track races in America, like the Peoria TT.
"There is no longer any hope for American driver Nicky Hayden (Owensboro, USA, 1981), who, on Tuesday, while training on his road bike, did not seem to respect a reported stop on a minor route between Riccione and Tavoleto in Italy and was driven by a Peugeot, driven by a young thirty-somethings, who could not stop the 2006 MotoGP World Champion (Honda) from crashing into the front window of his car and suffering multiple Head injuries, which, according to the doctors who attend him at the hospital Maurizio Bufalini, Cesena, it is materially impossible to recover."
Here are the latest details of the accident that occurred around 2 pm on May 17th. What is certain is that Nicky, was alone and not with a group as initially reported. In addition, it arrived from the right of via Ca'Raffaelli (municipality of Misano Adriatico) in the direction of Riccione. Once he arrived at the intersection with Via Tavoleto , for reasons yet unknown, he was struck perpendicularly by a car. It was driven by a 30-year-old man heading for the coast, as did the pilot.
A very violent impact for Nicky Hayden
The impact was extremely brutal, to the point that the number 69 bike was broken in two. But also that the windscreen of the car was almost completely destroyed. The most important thing remains to be discovered: whether the cause was a lack of attention on the part of the driver or Nicky. A more thorough investigation by the local police could therefore answer this question. Meanwhile, everyone is waiting with hope for Cesena's improvements. One of Nicky's brothers, Tommy Lee, as well as his mother Rose are expected today. "
The satellite view from Google maps, makes it difficult for me to understand how that much energy was transferred to that car to cause the damage it sustained, break a carbon fiber bicycle frame in 6 places, and injure Hayden.
It is a really narrow road, but that car must have been hauling major ass, so why haven't the authorities already announced charges to the driver?!?!?!
Edit:
Reports seem to indicate Nicky ignored the stop sign (which is painted on the road), but I don't think it's much of a reach, to think that he probably DID, and the way was clear when he looked, but the vehicle driver was hauling soooo much ass, he was on Hayden before he could get across!
The details are kind of irrelavant. Nicky is fighting for his life. I consider myself to be the world's worst Catholic. I was balckmailed into converting under threat of divorce. Miracles can and do happen.
Pat Hennen built my first race bike. He was an AMA Jr. He was good enough to beat King Kenny in Moto GP. He had a career ending accident at IOM. The reports I read about had him striking a bird @180 MPH. Wikipedia currently has him striking a curb at 150 MPH. Regardless, he was in a coma for 6 months. I saw him at Ron Grant's Racing Specialties after the fact. He remembered me and seemed to have all his facilities even though he never raced again. Bubba Shobert also recovered from his tragic accident at Laguna though he never raced again either.
Whether you believe or not, I urge everyone to get on their knees and pray for Nicky tonight. He needs all the help he can get!
Btw, speed limit on that road, from a sign posted not far before the intersection, is 50 kph/31 mph. That sign is on the right side of the road, and about 20 feet prior to that, on the left side of the roadway, is a sign facing traffic coming from the same direction the vehicle could read the speed limit sign on the right, NO CELLPHONE.
What has happened to Nicky is a big shock to me. As a big fan of his, I am devastated as to what he is going through.
My biggest nightmare as a cyclist has always been getting hit from behind by a driver that wasn't paying attention. The drivers around here have become so bad that I frequently see them driving in the bicycle lanes. I feel like I have less chance of someone pulling out in front of me on my motorcycle versus someone running me over from behind on my bicycle. I have given up riding the road as a result and fortunately my county is rapidly constructing miles upon miles of bicycle paths. The only downside is that I no longer can jump on my bike and go riding right out of my neighborhood, now I need to truck my bike to the nearest trail.

I saw that too, BUT...he got hit by a car. That kid was in a coma after seizing twice, once at scene of accident, and once more in the E.R., for 2 or 2.5 days.
Semi-coma for around 2 weeks, in and out of consciousness.
The pics I saw of that car from 1984, did not look half as bad, as that efffin Peugot does. I've little unscientific doubt, that M-efffferr was hauling some serious azzz on his way to the coast.
That said, let's keep sending prayers and well wishes. Schummy, didn't come out of it for a great while.
His Mom and older brother are there, plus his fiance, hopefully holding his hand, while having one sided "conversations" with him. It's thought to have a positive impact, though not an assurance.
