Exclamation Dyno VS street tuning!

hello guys..
since the introduction of new technology, and to be specific AutoTune from Power commander and ZAFM from Bazzaz, why are people still tuning on the dyno when they can get better result tuning in the street.. while u can use the ram air feature that the S1000RR has, and no dyno can give u that amount of air coming in the bike!!!!

can some1 please help me understand why we are still using dyne's still !? or is it a matter of knowing the RWHP!?

We have a couple dyno tuners on the forum, so I'm sure they will chime in soon to help answer the question.

IMO, a dyno is a great tool when used properly and with the understanding of what you're getting out of it vs. what happens on the street. The AutoTuner is another great piece of technology too. Personally, if I had the time and a dyno was close to where I live, I'd use a combination of both tools - a dyno and AutoTuner. There are things you can do with either that you can't easily do on the other.

You can't hit each rpm/throttle % and hold it on the street for the auto tuner to fully see what the air/fuel is doing and then provide accurate adjustments. Also the auto tuner might pick up inputs on your decel and apply that to your mapping which will affect your accel... Finally, the auto tuner depends on the O2 sensor.... When is the last time you changed yours because for dialing in a motorcycle for performance purposes, it has a short shelf life... $65 per sensor and my dyno guy changes his out every 10 or 20 dynos i think? Maybe more often...

A dyno is far superior to the auto tune while the auto tune will get you by if you can't make it to the dyno OR you can use your auto tune ON the dyno. $50 dyno run is certainly cheaper then a $250 dyno tune...(but you did have to pay about that much for the auto tune in the first place) And once you are tuned, you are good unless you move to an area with a vastly different sea level elevation....ie. Atlanta to denver OR start running race gas vs. pump...

As for the ram air, the airbox pressure sensor will adjust the computer based on this sensor and the ram air effect. However, there are dynos that can simulate the ram air effect now...

Simple, what AFR produces the most power on your bike? 13:1 13.1:1 13.4:1 ? Is the power a "plateau" or a peak. Do you care about MPG? What's the best AFR for most MPG??

These answer can't be answered without the use of a dyno.

Default S1000RR Tuning

My bike likes 13.4 to 1 AFR. This was my target for dyno tuning. I then ride the bike and edit changes to the map on my laptop after riding to get the smoothest running from the motor.

Most issues at 13.4 are an occasional lean spot which shows up as a slight surge at steady throttle setting. I have added some fuel at spots in the 2%, 5%, and 10% cells on the map. The higher cells have not needed extra tuning

When it is right, the pipe will run a chocolate brown on the inside of the tip.

Cheers, Mike
