Default Air Fuel with Auto-Tune

What is the leanest you can run safely with auto-tune. I was thinking of creating a economy map for the bike but I want to make sure not to melt anything

I don't know what the leanest is, but when I was working w/Dusty over at DynoJet to tap into the Speed Sensor and do a separate map and AFR table for each gear, he recommended bumping the AFR up to 13.8 in the cruising area of the map for 6th gear for economy.

Don't know what I would trust with dynojet's auto-tune, but when I tune a customer's bike that is primarily rode on the street, I tune to the low 14s for those loads and RPMs that memic 50-80 mph. Remember that autos are tuned to 14.65:1 at cruise. I've tuned my Busa to high 14s for cruise speeds, I would go leaner but it does like it. But you need to know that the bike will run warmer at leaner AFRs.

What is the best WOT air/fuel I think 13.2 was pretty ideal but seen some even leaner

IMO, that is somewhat of a loaded question. If you're talking about on a dyno, then I'd say from what I've seen and heard, I'd agree - 13.2 to 13.4. That being said, many drag racers and friends I know will tune (on a dyno) for 12.9-ish on a dyno realizing that when they get to the track, they will see slightly leaner (0.3-0.5 leaner) AFRs due to the ram air affect at higher speeds. And get better ETs then if they dyno tuned for 13.2-13.4 to begin with.

So to answer you're question... if you want the best dyno sheet to hang on your wall, then 13.2 to 13.4. If you want the best traps and ETs, it may likely be richer on a dyno (12.9ish) which would allow it to lean out on the street to 13.2-13.4 once you get the affect of ram air.

Some may argue otherwise, but this was one of the reasons I did a 6-gear map with the AutoTuner. Results on a dyno do not always translate 1 to 1 on the track or street. Don't get me wrong, a dyno is a great tool, but should not be treated as the only tool. It'll get you well on your way faster than most other means... but should be followed up with some real world testing too.

That's my $.02....

1000RR, do you happen to be a tuner or an engineer?

I'm not sure I want to answer that question...

An engineer by degree... and kinda like digging into this stuff and trying/reading/listening to theories.

Is that good/bad/indifferent/expected?

I figured and engineer (not sure what in though) the way you over analyze things.

Have you ever had your bike on a dyno? You seem to bad mouth them a lot.

Dragrace? Road race? Trackdays? Often see 140plus mph?
