Default full exhaust system Q

fitting tayrloade full exhaust pipe to my s1000, and wanting to know if the ecu on the s1000s actually really do automaticly tune to the pipe? so iv been told. obviously wont get the full power out of it with no tune but is it safe to run like this? not really concerened with a pc5 and tune on the streetbike, did previously to my old one, might try it with no tune for now and if its so bad get it done in the future. thoughts?

yes it does. The technical aspects have been discussed someone on the forum in detail. It took about 20 miles or so for me and my full exhaust. first start up was a rough idle but after a couple rides no popping on engine deceleration. it still likes to pop some until it's warmed up in the morning but that's just the richness if the automatic choke.

I personally wouldnt run it without a PCV or Bazzaz. BMW people say it will cause problems and you will notice lack of throttle response, etc. You just bought a full exhaust, what is another $340 for a PCV? Your warranty is gone as well. You might as well get the proper fuel to air mixtures from the start and take the chance of damaging the motor.

Your warranty is not gone for fitting a full exhaust and PC5.

A dealer local to me has installed a few full Akro systems without a PC5 or Bazazz box. They claim the bike adapts and so far none of the riders have complained and the bikes run just fine. And there is still warranty.

Default Taylormade

I've fitted the Taylormade system last month. It's cold in SE Pennsylvania, but I've managed to put 400 miles on it, or so. It definitely adjusted and smoothed itself out over the first 50 miles. I've never run it with the db killer in, and I'm loving the sound, but the mid-range is really what you notice. My bike pulls much harder at lower revs than with the stocker. I'm really pleased. The only warning is to be patient when taking off your stock pipes, the clearance to reach the nuts is insane. Having a ratchet wrench that bends at the head is key. Bought a 10mm flexible wrench at Sears for less than 20 bucks after a lot of cursing and frustration.

Boy, I'd sure hate to have your dealer service my bike. I wouldn't listen to that line of crap. At least with my dealer that is SO not true on nearly all levels. Hell, they as a company sell Akro slipons, install other full systems, and HP ECUs, and work on all sorts of other bikes. They work for me, not against me. They are bike people for crying out loud. If I'm unhappy, I won't be back to buy another - and they understand that.

You MIGHT install an exhaust yourself and screw something up, but the preponderance of proof is on BMW to prove your mods were the cause of any problem (at least here in the USA) that would void an engine warranty. Listen to a couple of these guys. The ECU will adjust to adding an exhaust alone. It may not do better than a PCV added on, but it shouldn't do worse. The Taylor Made has bungs on it, and can handle both O2 sensors from the stock ECU - like it was designed for.

Worst case, a full system alone may not pass an emissions test, or a noise test in your state or at your track.

I have a PC5 and a Taylor Made sitting around waiting for me to install and then tuned by a really great tuner friend. It isn't BMW that's holding me back, its the local track noise limits that are giving me the willies. God 107db? What was I thinking? Pay $250 for a track day then sit out the rest of the day? Go to Banned Camp?

Now, I believe you are right, that the addition of a PCV or Bazzaz and a tune by any decent tuner isn't going to make the A/F ratio any leaner than it already is. It should get richer, better, cooler, making it a more reliable bike - with more power. Now THAT might get your warranty scrutinized a little closer by BMW as it bypasses some of the factory ECU functions, but that needs to be conclusive as well. On that count, I would consider removing a PCV before taking it in for service, and that's a bit of work.

Personally, I'm really waiting to see what ECU Unleashed comes up with. If they can flash my ECU and then set it back, I wouldn't be leaving evidence of hardware changes laying around. They are late in getting the product out the door, but I think it will be worth it with a good tuner nearby.

That's my 2-cents.
