Interested in opinions from those who have done this mod. It seems to me there are 3 reasons to do this (in no particular order):
(1) it looks better
(2) it sounds louder
(3) it increases HP and reduces weight

On (1) I agree. But it's expensive just for that.
On (2) I see this as a disadvantage as it restricts the tracks I can go to, and my wife and neighbors have all commented on liking the fact that my bike is quiet. not really interested in pissing them off.
On (3) it seems like the advantage is relatively minimal. No where near as noticeable as say light wheels or upgrading the suspension, which is IMHO immediately perceptible and a dramatic improvement.

Do I have this right? Or am I missing it?

thanks!

You've pretty much nailed it...

For me personally its an expensive way to un-cork the glorious sound that the BMW engineers designed it to be...and for me, again personally I could care less about the power increase because c'mon guys, shes already got 183 to the ground stock...

I'm going with the Akra system...IMO, sounds the best

The power increase is very noticeable. I'm sure wheels and suspension are as well but they are also more expensive.

Since we are also talking the Power Commander shouldn't we include 'Smooths out power band?'

I do it just for the heck of it. Best mod money can buy is a light weight battery (Ballistic). Saved 8 lb at the cost of $145.00. Full Akra short titanium is $2000 and save about 13 lb.

If you like a quite bike do not get the Akra short exhaust. I have it on my bike and it not quite by any means.

several months of research and I chose Arrow evo-II. Reasons: looks, quality and sound. Didn't really care about power gains, however still didn't decide between PC V and Bazzaz as since I'm getting this setup better do it right and get the most out of it. I don't particulary agree with the statement that full system is waste, but admit that started saving money for suspension upgrade...

1. Midpipe exhaust
- saves money, must cut stock, pretty much same as full systems in every way, sounds same except maybe 1-3hp less
2. Full Exhaust
- best hp usually, sounds good (anything that eliminates cat), choice of ss, ti, inconel
3. Long End can
- exhaust very noticable, smoother sound (sorta)
4. Short End can
- compact look, less noticed, but sharper sound (sorta)

Power Commander:
1.pcv
- custom maps widely available, windows based
2. bazzaz
- less maps available but reportedly more programmable (more injectors, 8 v 4, benefit? over my head)
3. bmw hp ecu
- insanely expensive, most compatible, probably best performance, but benefit to street/track, over my head.

I run a full system Leo Vince with a Power Commander and tuned by the boys at SJBMW was consistent 193whp on pump gas. Love the sound and the nice thing is, you can leave the insert at the tip of the pipe for street riding and it's a nice balance between sound and no sound
