MCN do such a good job iv just finished reading 4 pages of the test in the paper, and the main gripe for the S1 is the rear shock and oversteer (without flipping rear shock plate) and on the long bumpy straight the rear shock overheated, thats defiantly my next mod, it also set the pit straight top speed on its trap it was going 162 mph.....

and i LOVE that aprilia i think the fact that it has ohlins back and front really made the big difference in that test on good control tyres, imagine the S1 had full back to front bitubo suzzies, or the aprilia had 190 odd bhp......

food for thought, once more tho they do such a good job at mcn i read it every week religiously its my bible lol go on mcn......

Can you expand on this? 'Oversteer' on a motorcycle?

What does 'flipping rear shock plate' mean or do?

Shock overheated on a straight? Meaning the damping went away?

Thanks.

urr over steer maybe not holding an intended tight line ????????(simple enough)

u can alter the adjustable rear shock 10mm up or down with it's top mounting point (it has an eccentric bolt hole).......

and yes the shock lost dampening and had to be wound right up to its top setting to control the bumps (to stop the bike bobbling around).......

I think MCN are spot on... I had to choose between the Aprilia and the BMW S1000RR and it came down to the fact that the BMW was more of an all round Bike. I commute every day and I was worried about the Aprilia being a bit fragile for that kind of daily use.

I test rode both the BMW and the Aprilia back-to-back and the Aprilia definitely handles a bit better. It's utterly laser-like in terms of it's steering and once it's down in the corner, MAN it carves a nice line. I found the seating position to be a bit cramped and it put out a LOT of heat from the engine.

Once I considered everything, I chose the BMW. There's something about the freakish amount of power it delivers that makes me scream into my helmet at the top of my lungs every time I hit 11,000 - 14,000 rpms on this thing.

I reserve the right to buy an Aprilia as well if I can make space in my garage for it..

I've just finished reading this weeks test in MCN and without wishing to sound anything like the infamous 'Garth' it occurred to me that the S1k was up against the special edition RSV4 rather than the standard bike. It also fought the Ducati 1198SP. Does this mean that a stock standard first attempt at a superbike is a baw hair away from a super special Aprillia and top of the line Duc?
I wonder whether BMW would release an 'M' version or similar, (I know thats the car wing of the brand but they can't very well make an S1000RR R can they?). Surely that would be a fairer comparison?

That first guy is so boring to listen to.

Props to all these bikes

MV wins in the looks dept
Ducati and the KTM win in the sound and torque dept
BMW wins in the engine dept
the Aprilia just wins

i'll take one of each please

I have to agree somewhat but it is the same as when the BMW was put up against the Japanese bikes, they could easliy and did say I am sure - of course the BMW won, it had TC, ABS and 25ph more than any of us how could it not? It was a close race between the 2011 ZX10 and the S1RR.

To me it is also about price point, all these bikes listed are far more expensive than the BMW and I am sure that if BMW made an "M" version that was about the same price with the Carbon, suspension, brakes etc it would have beat the Aprilia around the track.

BTW - anyone in BC want a great deal on a brand new RSV4 Factory? I just went down to Pacific Yamaha (the local Aprilia dealer) and they have a brand new RSV4 F for $19,995.00! MRSP $26,000.00. Have to admit that it is a very good looking bike!

BMWs exotic bike line is the HP2 (High Performance 2 cylinder), so a performance version might be something like an HP4 S1000 or HP4 1000RR. Maybe even an HP4 Sport
