You know you should be able to get that bike shipped WITH you back to the U.S. I'm pretty sure you can do it with your household baggage, just have to drain the fluids out of it. You can do this even if you're not allowed a "vehicle" to be shipped back.

I'd check into that before selling a loved bike

Ah.. well then.. he may be S.O.L if his company isn't covering him for that then.. *dunno* .. always the out of pocket expence of like 700GBP +/- a few to have a shipping company do it for you.
