My bike won't start today. Yesterday I rode it on the twisties for hours, no issues at all. I checked fuses, gs 911(no codes).
There was a Ducati/BMW techi around, he said battery/terminals are ok. It sounds like engine has no compression and it does not sound good. I tried to bump start it a couple of time, no bueno. I'm taking it to the dealership tomorrow. But what do you guys think?
I tried rain mode, etc... no beuno eithher. It just decided to die. @bennymx you must have seen this. Tell me my baby is not severely damaged. I only have 22k miles on it.
HAve you been riding in the rain? Do you have a belly pan? If so, you may have sucked water in via the hoses. This happened to a guy a the track, chased it for weeks until they figured out what was happening..
Well, just listening for such a short amount of turn over, it sure does not sound good. Like low on compression or off time. Are you really telling the whole story on exactly what it felt like and sounded like when you turned the key off last when this issue started?
What's the fix for low compression? New engine or something that can be fixed. It sounded normal last time I was riding it. A day later, same exact thing as in video.

I doubt this is his issue. On my way to South Dakota I did 6 hours straight at 120mph, in the dumping rain, stopping only for gas. It was hell. But the bike had no problems at all.

Not fuel pump. Can hear it prime. Bit weird how it rode fine the other day and it doesn't now. A comp test will tell us if something has failed internally (valves, cams, rings). Almost sounds like no fuel or spark. But it could also be a crank sensor. If it is not supplying a reading to the ecu then she won't start. The sound is not good. I also don't like that there are no fault codes. Might have fuel and spark as I doubt you would have all coils or injectors faulty. If anything it would run on less than 4 cylinders. The fact that it doesn't start at all is saying it either has no fuel, no spark or no compression. Sounds like no comp.
I have seen these engines with high carbon build up on the valves and pistons causing low comp. If you didn't hear any noises from the engine when you last rode it. And it hasn't been progressively getting noisier over time then lets hope something hasn't actually failed. Might just need a clean up inside.
Things the dealer should do:
1. Check all live sensor status readings on diagnostic PC
2. Compression test
3. Leak down test
4. Check spark
5. Check fuel pump/ injectors
6. Remove rocker cover and check cam shafts, valve springs, retainers, timing
7. Remove cylinder head and inspect all valves for carbon deposit and condition of cylinder bores
8. Inspect all pistons for carbon deposits and inspect rings for wear or damage
Just dropped bike off at the dealership. Master techie said he will test basics quickly, but won't be able to do any thorough check until next week. Battery, fuses, etc... are all ok. He thinks the starter is fried, but he said not too sure, because it could be engine-related (no spark). I have a new OEM battery in there, so definitely not battery related.
This blows, long weekend wasted, I was planning on going to the Dragon. I better go get that R1 ASAP.
maybe she knows your mind is wandering to the r1 and is throwing a tantrum??
if not the battery it sounds like you ran out of gas but the gas light isn't on...sorry for your troubles z00...
if my engine goes i am going to build it out a bit, hi comp gasket, ported head, bored piston, race cams, full exhaust, rapid bike evo, brentune flash, then i will ditch the ddc for some 25mm gp suspension carts and penske triple rear
when was the last time you changed the oil? time before that? before that? how many track hours on the engine?
I think the RR will be jealous for sure from R1. Especially if I go with FKR cartridges 0
I just want a bike to ride. I'm gonna miss a long weekend. I change the oil every 3500 miles. I did 20+ track days last year. This year only 2 so far. It would have been 4 days if the b!tch would run.
The RR is not meant to be owned without warranty. It's crazy how many items get replaced under warranty.
wow every 3500 TRACK miles? dude no wonder if you blew your motor...try changing every 10 hours on track or every 30 sessions or every third day to play it safe... if you changed your oil once last year that is 2800 minutes or 46 hours without fresh oil...with this new information and you as >10k rpm president it is looking more like no comp...
That sucks @sro. I hope you recover man. I did not realize your accident was that bad. I do not have as many responsibilities as most people (no kids, wife, etc....) so I get to ride whenever I feel like it.
UPDATE:
Dealership just called me. They said it's not the starter or an electric problem. It seems to be mechanical, BMW sent them special instructions to do a remote diagnostic test on the engine. It's scheduled for next week.
Which is fair. You should enjoy what you are doing now to the fullest. If priorities change, that's ok. Just don't judge without knowing what's going on. Priorities do change.
Hi zoo stupid question but I was wondering if the Kickstand kill switch might have gone south?
Just a thought.
Well sorry I thought Id had read all posts of this thread and finally realized that I missed the last page.
Good luck zoo hope they sort you out.
Pops that was a great post. This is a very selfish hobby and prior to being married all i had was motorcycles. After getting married things changed and knowing myself I hung up the helmet and focused on my wife and kids.
The day after my divorce I went out and bought another motorcycle. Since then I've bought 4 bikes.
As much fun as I have on the street and track with friends in all honesty I still long for my family.
Somethings cant be replaced or fixed....
my bike is a 2015RR with over 18000 miles on it... Wish it only had 3000 if you know what I mean..

Sometimes its the small stuff that bugs the bike.Check all the fuses (then again GS toll would pick it up) try to disconnecting the battery for couple of hours maybe it will reset itself, worth a try.
I have always thought that if it is your own bike (or fill in the blank with anything else), bought with your own money, you should be able to do whatever you damn well please with it. It's not up to me to say whether you should treat it like precious art or a tool like a shovel. That's your call. Enjoy.
Tough crowd! Maybe because some don't know that for 14 years in Boston I did not get a bike because it made no sense. Between school, work, helping family, and only few months of good riding weather I saw no value in owning a bike. Once I moved to Calif I got a bike right away. People are different, some would be happy to own a bike that's not ridden often, but not me. And there are those who own bikes to cruise around, go fast on straights, and socialize. That's not for me either. Each to their own.
As far as wobbling on a track, going through stop signs, close calls, crashing, etc.... The only difference is that I have the guts to post my mistakes, discuss, and learn from them. I met many people on this forum. Some of whom have been riding for way longer than I have on sportbikes, they get smoked on the track even with my DOT tires. And there are others who have been racing and lap me with one hand. Happy with my progress, second season on a sport bike and I do advanced group pace on DOT tires. Compare that to some people on here who have been riding way longer. Then let's talk :wink2:
I have learned a good bit from this forum. Mods are great (with the exception of SRO JK ). I hope my damn RR gets fixed soon. In the meantime, I plan to close a deal on a 16 R1 very soon.

Would the starter turn if the kickstand switch was bad?
