So I'm kinda bummed out. I did the running-in check yesterday at 467 miles at the dealer. They said the limiter is taken off at this time. I was all excited and a bit nervous and decided to open 'er up right after and I felt the engine cut. I've never hit the limiter while breaking in and didn't know what to expect. Do I have to adjust the rev limiter up at home? The shift light is still at 7k. I just haven't had time to screw with it as I got called into a barrage of work right after the service!
If in 6th and the bikes going yea, yea, yea then you get to 128mph and the bikes says gtfo I'm still being run in. You have still got a break in limiter.
Update: spoke with the dealer and they advised that they unlocked it. I have to go into "user mode" and increase the rev limiter myself. Bike is a 2016RR.
I went through the exact same. Hear me out.
Question 1: are you able to hit the MODE BUTTON and cycle through the available modes: rain, sport, race, slick, and user.
If yes, they have installed the coding plug. If no, Return to dealer.
Question 2: after the initial service, have you taken the bike past 9,000 rpm. Like 10, 11, 12 etc. if you are not able to go past 9k rpm, then they have not removed the limiter.
The shift light that comes on at 7k rpm is from the factory. You can change it by yourself. See page 111 in owners manual .
Easy way to find out... Open up your package with your user manual and stuff. There is a black vinyl bag with a plug in it. If the plug is in the bag they didn't unlock it. If the plug is missing, you can take off your seat and make sure the plug is inserted into the cable correctly.
Thank you everybody for the replies! I still haven't plugged in the "slick mode" plug. Is it necessary before the limiter is disabled? I will install it when I get home tonight and hopefully light up the streets in flames.
(Time is going by so slow at work thinking about the RR ;D)
"shakes head". When the run-in check is completed at the dealer they should install the slick plug and then remove the run in limiter. Then they should set your shift light to 14k. Thats what I have always done. Customers don't want to see the damn light coming on after they just had the limiter taken off.
Oh man! I had to do the plug and set the limiter myself after the 600mi service, but after the service I can go all the way to the redline until the engine cut off around 14k RPM.
So glad I did the dyno break-in.... I never saw the 9k limiter, funny I never test rode the 2015 either. I only test rode a 14 prior to the 15 being released and wasn't quite sold on it. No regrets waiting for the 15, turned out to be a better bike for me....
I think the OP needs to find a more knowledgeable dealer/tech... :/
Same thing happened to me one year ago, I finished the brake in period on my 2010 bike, and decided not to install the coding plug.
Went to the dealer and removed the limiter, but the limiter kept cutting off at 9000rpm, until I took the coding plug again to the dealer to install it with the same procedure for the limiter...
I just installed the slick plug and now waiting for the sun to come up to test it out Will post details and put the dealer on blast if it's still governed at 9k... I asked twice if they're 100% sure that the limiter was removed.
Just to confirm: The slick plug doesn't have anything to do with the rev limiter?
$263.59 running-in check (Riverside, CA, USA)
Pro: Bike felt stiffer/tighter in the front (probably from the steering head re-torque).
Con(?): They used synthetic oil. To my limited understanding, I thought it was good to stick with mineral oil for the first oil change as metal will still be wearing away.
UPDATE: bouncing off at 9k... omw back to BMW Motorcycles of Riverside. Part of me wonders what else they forgot to do... At $263 one would think corners wouldn't be cut; but alas, we are all still human. Thanks for the input everybody.
What they really forgot to do was take the limiter off jysn. I've never seen any of that happen. I have always removed it and it's been fine. Sounds like excuses to me.
Hot damn this bike is even more fun sans the limiter. !!
