My bike came stock with cast wheels and 190 tires. Techi at dealership said the bike won't be the same if I put forged wheels. Something about TC and ECU.
1-What exactly needs to be changed (traction control or ECU settings?) if HP forged wheels replace cast one? Can 190 tires be used with HP forged wheels?
2- I was replacing tires and checking brake pads. Service manual says min thickness of metal part to be 4.5mm, but brake pads don't look like pic in service manual.
Can someone point out which part of brake pad needs to be 4.5mm min? I already ordered Brembo SC brake pads, but I have a track day coming up and I don't want to be riding with bad brake pads. So not sure when to replace them. Almost at 8k miles.
You can use the forged wheels without any problems , you can also use a 190/55/17 or a 200/55/17 on either wheel . I also use a 200/60/17 slick no problem . Your techie is confused .You really need to find some more knowledgeably shops !
BMW put out a technical bulletin about this concerning exactly what his tech stated. I don't remember if it is exclusive to 2015's and the bmsx ECU, or all years, but for some reason I want to non Roger Clemens and say it was 2015 specific.
He actually posed reasonable questions, guess that brings him up to 3, now.>
Note, you are looking at them 180° from the sketch from service manual. The portion of pad that shows the blue assembly line check mark, is the backing plate. This is the critical component that has to be 4.5mm thick. Apparently there are some pads available, in this design, that have less than 4.5mm thickness and when used with our bikes, can come out/not function correctly.
The forged wheel bit....the rub is that the circumference of the 200/55 tire is greater than the 190/55, and when fitted to a bike originally fitted with 190, will throw off the preprogrammed parameters for the DTC. Some have disputed this, and claim there's no difference, but I believe it is because there is another aspect BMW has been intentionally silent about.
I think it may also have to do with the rate of acceleration of the cast wheel vs the forged wheel, not just the difference in circumference. The forged wheel will "spin up" much quicker than the cast unit and may be computed as a loss of traction. This hasn't been mentioned before, as far as I know, and I believe BMW hadn't made this clear, because it starts getting too intrusive with their intellectual property.
The 190 will fit just fine on the forged rim, both rims' dimensions are the same, 17x6.
My conclusion is based off my personal experience with my 2015, before and after installation of forged wheels, with the exact same tires. Tc light is like a strobe light, ever since I fitted the Titax rims.
Just be sure when you do buy replacement pads they're specifically for the S1000RR or R and you will be OK, but be sure and still check plate thickness in case the package is mismarked!
Since my bike originally came with the cast wheels and they installed the HP wheels after taking them off another bike, my dealer told me they had to recalibrate the system for the 200 rear.
Not sure about the 15's but the hp4 has no issues . When I go from my track tires 200/60 to my street tires 190/55 the TC will flash for about 10 miles then it seems to recalibrate itself and all is good
Luker,
I think it may also have to do with the rate of acceleration of the cast wheel vs the forged wheel, not just the difference in circumference. The forged wheel will "spin up" much quicker than the cast unit and may be interpreted as a loss of traction. This hasn't been mentioned before, as far as I know, and I believe BMW hadn't made this clear, because it starts getting too intrusive with their intellectual property.
I might be way off base, but I have a reason why I believe this to be a possibility.
Luker have you mounted cast rims to your HP4? That would be interesting, if you went from forged to cast, and note any changes in DTC function. I realize it's relatively absurd to do this, as the accessorials are different, and the forged wheels superior, but on the off chance you did?
When I mention my dtc light is like a strobe, I meant while riding.
When I would wind on the throttle hard, with the cast wheels, I could feel the rear end break loose and tc light up.
Once I mounted the forged wheels, the slightest bit of aggression with the throttle, (but much less than hard) the dtc light will flash as much or more than when I'd twist the throttle much more aggressively with the cast wheels, and I don't feel the rear end breaking loose. This was a comparison done in Race mode, same tires, relatively the same ambient temperature, same area of Mexico.
Ok.. At first it was just a tire change same rims same results as stated, forged wheels . Now have cast street wheels , same results as stated with carbon track rims . Never tried cast wheels on track .
