Radar detector to Sena 20S

Well I decided I had to have a good radar setup on the bike. Tickets are just too damn expensive!

I've just received my Sena 20S and the Sena SR10 HFP Bluetooth two way radio adapter. I got the power wire routed this morning and mounted everything to the tech mount stem stand for radar detectors. I decided to have it all in one, so I've simply used Velcro to get the Bluetooth adapter on to the radar.

I've paired the SR10 to the phone 2 of the Sena and went out. Turned on the music and headed out to some of the known false alarms in town for a test. It works awesome! There might be a 1/10 of a second delay, but other wise it's pretty quick. The music is killed and the radar detector comes on telling me what band is hitting me. Very happy.

So the components are:

STI Driver radar detector.
Sena 20S communicator.
Sena SR10 Blue tooth two way radio adapter. Does HFP (needed for phone 2).
Techmount Steering stem stand for radar detectors.
Power cord.

I have a Cardo G9X as well and I think the Escort Max 2 with Bluetooth would work just as well. It's detectable by the police if radar is illegal in your area.

If anyone is thinking of doing this with a smaller Bluetooth dongle, it has to have the HFP protocol or it wont pair with the Sena. Plus the smaller 20 dollar dongles are as reliable as a Russian car.

I have a similar setup.

SMH10 on the helmet with low profile speakers.
SR10 adapter under the seat.
12v USB charger adapter to power the SR10.
Escort 9500ci in the trunk
Phone in my pocket

Music and calls come through until the radar or laser detector goes off and then I get the audio override through the helmet.

The setup works really well.

A detector is a must have on the HP4 in my opinion, unless you have serious willpower on the throttle.

A laser detector generally simply provides you with advance warning you are about to be pulled over. Occasionally, there is sufficient scatter from the laser hitting something other than you to get an alert, but this is uncommon.

Most detectors that are BT enabled will pair with your phone; reason being they use a companion phone app (for GPS, crowd sourced reporting, etc). Assuming that your Cardo is also paired with your phone, you should be able to hear alerts. The exception is the Escort BT detectors; these work with their Escort Live app and have various audio routing (and other) issues. The Valentine V1 will also work if you use their optional BT dongle and run YaV1 software (Android only). There are also BT transmitters that you can add on to any detector that have an audio out jack; those should be able to pair directly to your Cardo.

Hope this makes sense.

Here's a re-post of a link:

SOME states have passed laws making jamming a LIDAR illegal.....unfortunately, MY state.... :(
USA Laser Jammer Laws - Guys of LIDAR

Caveat emptor.....

P.S. As an aside, I've used a Valentine 1 in my car since the early '90's, and while it's pretty out of date now, it's worked flawlessly over all these years, and has pretty much always scored the best in any detector shootout. I will be updating mine soon and I highly recommend them.

I should have taken pictures during the install. Everything is concealed, so I'll have to take pieces of the bike off.

As soon as I get a chance I'll try and get something written up.

In the meantime, my set up is as follows:

- Escort 9500ci (concealed install) radar detector with laser jammer.
- LADAR jammer mounted under front nose
- Radar detector mounted in intake (HP4 has no room behind nose cowl)
- Display and warning LED mounted above instrument cluster (combi)
- Control buttons mounted on fork clamp
- Central control module mounted in trunk
- 9500 ci GPS receiver mounted in trunk
- LADAR jammer control module mounted in trunk
- Power from taillight harness to 9500ci in trunk
- 12V USB power adapter in trunk
- Sena SR10 to connect radar detector audio to my helmet bluetooth

The whole setup is plug and play - I used BMW repair connectors to get power to the unit and used connectors where it made sense (power, for example).

To get everything to fit and look clean, there was a LOT of "wire shortening" on the 9500ci. The detector is made for a car, so some of the wires are long. I also wrapped everything in OEM harness tape for a factory look. All connections are soldered.

In operation, the system works very well. There is a digital display above the instrument cluster that I have set to show GPS speed and there is a "master warning" led that sits to the right of the shift light. The system has voice prompts, so if I am listening to music or on the phone, radar alerts override the audio.

Don't know if it has paid for itself yet, but rides up Mt. Lemmon are definitely less stressful now..
