For the longest time most believe that it symbolizes a propeller but some BMW historians subscribe to the Bavarian flag theory. I tend to side with them.

I read somewhere that the colors symbolize a white propeller turning against a blue sky. But I must admit upon seeing the Bavarian flag, that also makes perfect sense.

BMW started out as a airplane company. After the war they weren't allowed to build planes anymore so the switched to cars and bikes. The twin came from a scaled down plane motor. It was easier then trying to build a motor from scratch.
