Default warranty work and turn around times

Do most of the BMW dealerships have parts on hand?

The reason im asking is i want to know what the turn around is gonna be if i bring my baby in to the shop. The left side engine housing cover is leaking oil. There arent any cracks in the case or anything so i think it must be a gasket. But it is leaking badly enough that after a ride it would drench my left foot, the shifter, and with even more concern, the back tire...which would make for some interesting times...i felt like i was riding dirt at one point. Well anyways to get to the point its sketch and i wont ride it. But i am overseas and its in my buddies garage right now. I don't want that thing to be in the shop for ever...especially right after a deployment and given the fact i haven ridden for a little while. The last thing i want is it for it to be in the shop for two months while they order a part from germany.

If it's just a gasket I would assume a pretty quick turn around. Mine has been in the shop for over a month now and will potentially be in for another but mine is in need of a new camshaft among other things which are on backorder.

Your bike could be repaired in the time it takes riding there. Gasket sealant is all you need. Might as well buy another bike if you want warranty work done.

You could.... but if the gasket is actually bad, probably best to go on and get a new gasket. Using only sealant can work, but a gasket is better in my experience. If you buy a sealant, just make sure it is resistant to petroleum products as some are not.

Best thing to do if you're interested in them doing the work is call them in advance, see if they have that particular gasket, then schedule your appt. I had my right side leak (more like weep...). Called them up, they ordered the gasket... the next Saturday took it in, they let me borrow one of their bikes on the floor, went down the road to lunch, came back, picked my bike back up.

There is also a grommet around the stator wires. That could be bad. Just FYI.

so are you saying if any bike needs warranty work that you should buy a new one?

i just got mine back from bmw for a ign switch that was intermittent.it took 3.5 weeks.i was told by the shop manager that bmw is very controlling on what they do as warranty.my battery died a few months ago and he said he was still fighting with bmw because they don't believe that it went bad.

Warranty is not worth my time in money. It's cheaper for me to clean a switch, machine a part, or buy something off ebay. I have nothing but *horror* stories from dealer service. If I break something doing my own service, I have nobody but myself to blame. That's the way I like it.
