Default Dr BMW How long do i have?

All the posts re camshaft, clutch and gearbox issues are to say the least worrying..for me anyway..

This is what i found on my last oil change, 2000 miles covered since last one...small (but easily seen) shiny metal fragments...is this normal or is my time riding her limited.???

Your thoughts please

I think you will find that fairly normal. Altho I have yet to find any shavings on my bike, it seems every other bike the plug comes out looking like yours. Not sure I would worry yet.

Looks within bounds of "normal" to me.

Yes it does.

To the OP that looks OK. Usually after about the 3rd oil change there really shouldn't be much on there. How many miles do you have on the bike altogether and how many oil changes?

Think it all depends on the mileage. Mine hasnt had an oil change yet (and BMW insists on doing the first). Didn't know there was a magnetic drain but fully expect to see shavings for the 1st couple.

thanks for the input guys, as i said in the first post she has done 12000 MILES and she has had 6 oil changes in total..Shell advance ultra 4T.
What concerns me is the fact that you can still see shiny fragments after this amount of miles, the engine is not to bad when you start from cold but rattles like a bag of spanners when warm and at the lights you get funny uneven noises from the clutch so i tend to idle out of gear with the clutch pulled in.
Are most the same ? spring 2010 build date

Oops sorry i didn`t state the total milage in the first post..forgive me

I'm no mechanic but that + the other symptoms would have me at the local BMW mechanic next ride. At 12k miles, shavings aren't a new engine wearing in. They're something wearing out.

You're under warranty, so it doesn't make any sense not to take her in. Better now than have it trailered in cause the engine grenaded while out for a ride.

Or to give you a better idea, my F3 had a heckuva lot more miles from 1995 and poorer maint history (before I got her) and I never found anything in her oil but... well oil

Likely shavings from the gear dogs.

You should not be getting that many shavings after 12k miles. That would be normal for first or second oil change.
