|
s1000rr buying a used bike?
So here's the thing, I've decided the time has come to sell my Daytona 955i and upgrade to a used s1000rr. I've test riden a new one last year and loved it although I couldn't justify buying new.
So what should I look out for when buying a used one and what extras should I look out for and what to avoid?. Did they all come with the gear shift thing???

In addition to the base model, like all BMWs, the S1000RR has options available, which include:
Motorsports Paint Scheme: $750
Race ABS: $1000
Race ABS & Dynamic Traction Control (DTC): $1480
Gear Shift Assistant: $450
Anti Theft Alarm: $395
You want to find a poser and not a racer bike. Old guys like me who use 70% of the ability of the bike are ideal, as we never push things too hard. Bikes that are raced are driven much harder. Look for the guy selling who has other bikes and a few cars in his garage. Then you know he has not had the time to beat the snot out of it.

I would add to lobelsteve's answer (good stuff, BTW) that you should note the vibration level of the bikes you try out. I've only ridden three different S1000RRs and they seemed very acceptable to me, but MANY have complained about excessive vibrations in early models.
There are other minor things about the 2010-11 models--throttle spring tension, a few bikes with uncooperative quick shifters, and some complaints about the way the ABS/DTC works--but I think the vibration issue was a pretty popular topic among the owners of the early bikes.
And no, they did not all come with the 'gear shift thing" (quick shifter), but I think most did.

All good points above. The best thing about the BMW is the 3 year new warranty. All of the bikes should be under warranty. The 2010 and 2011 seem to go for aboout the same price. and the extended warranty can be bought until the factory warranty expires. DONT buy a BMW s1000rr with a full exuast or a PCV. The warranty is void in BMW's eyes.(Some individual dealers may cover the warranty) Unless you buy it from a dealer and they will put in writing that they will honor the manufacturers warranty. If you buy one with a full exhaust etc., just remember you are buying one out of warranty that has most likely been ridden harder than the average bike. You might look around and find a left over 2011 either demo or new that they are giving deals on. Around Christmas a guy said he paid 14.6k plus tax for a 2011 new. I paid 15.2k plus tax for my 2011 around thanksgiving.

Also Get the Gear Assistant, ABS, and TC. They are great features and really make the bike worth having and better than all of the other litre bike out there.

As I put in your other thread-go for the dtc/abs model etc,but very few base models were sold in the UK.
UK warranty is two years.
Gear selector problems,in some cases,is down to the quickshifter but most problems appeared after fitting rearsets or clutch levers.

I've checked this with 2 different dealer. Full exhaust by itself does not void the warranty if you let the stock ECU untouched and let it relearn the new exhaust. PCV or any other tuning done to stock ECU is however a different story and could indeed void the warranty.

In the warranty book handed out with every bike in the US, it clearly states that ANY preformance accessory voids the warranty(in BOLD letters). I assume they have the same warranty book for the rest of the world too. Dont trust what any dealer tells you. Read what BMW corporate states in the warranty guide.

AS noted above, 2yr warranty in UK but even a slip on exhaust will technically void the warranty on the engine (even the official Akro if not fitted by a Main Dealer) from what I was told (by my BMW dealer).
All other advice really worthwhile above. Get a moderately used one for sensible money and you will be laughing. I bought a main dealer 2010 bike last summer for £10k with all the key upgrades, new tyres and a service, warranty extended to cover a full year of ownership, 2k miles on the odo.
BMW's warranty is terrific, with roadside assistance and recovery built in.
My bike has a little vibe through the clipons but very mild and only at certain revs. The gear assist works great as long as you're loading the engine, otherwise it gets quite reluctant. I generally clutch it unless I am really on it.
Fantastic machine, I love it.

Welcome to Bavaria's finest! I too upgraded from a Triumph! I had an 06 Sprint ST ABS. I was a little nervous of the power this bike can make at first, but with all the technology/ safety features the Beemer has to offer I think I'll probably be safer on this bike than anything else. As far as mods go, if your auhorized dealer installs then that dealer typically, will honor the work on it. Let the dealer and BMW figure it out - if there is a warranty problem that results from your mods. I really want to add the Taylor Made exhaust myself, but will see.
