Default GoPro vs Nikon and Best Angles for Video

It has been a while since posting, but thinking of the forum with a new GoPro HD "naked" camera where I would like to video some rides on the BMW.

So far, I have had mixed success with a helmet mount:

- First video was too low - staring down at the road and yellow lines - dizzying!

- The next was a bit too high - down the road but boring and the sensation of speed dramatically reduced....

- So my question for the film directors is what is the best way to mount for the most exciting videos?

- Closer to the tank? For a "POV" (point of view) perspective but where you can see the speedo and tach? (Dont most enthusiasts like to see the speedo and tach?)

- Although the GoPro is impressively small, rechargeable and waterproof (all good) its low light performance is weak...and the sound pretty bad

- So also wondering if it might be better to simply mount my normal digital camera with video for better film and sound quality?

- Any other tips for making exciting bike videos with high quality video and sound greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year,

The GoPro gets in the way of tucking behind the windscreen, but mounting the cam just in front of the gas cap looks great. Mount to the metal surface of the tank. The cover of the ECU vibrates too much. Gives a good view of the dash and you can see your hands a little too. Neat to see what you're doing sometimes. I've been using the 60fps mode on the GoPro HD. Looks faster on the TV.

I use a Contour not a GoPro and I have 2 mounting points. The first is non-speedo friendly. I have a ram mount attached to my mirror or mirror mounts (depending if I'm on street or track). Gives a great view of the road but no bike. On the track or for a Speedo friendly view I have a stem mount and adjustable arm that I can get several different angles with.

Thank you both.

Nomad, the perspective you show in your photo is exactly what I have in mind....can you give any more detail on how you achieved that?

That shot is a frame from the GoPro HD in mode r5 I believe. 1080p at 30fps. Less resolution and 60fps would probably be better. Just not sure if the field of view changes between those two modes.

Used a curved mount stuck to the tank just in front of the gas cap. It's a slanted and curved surface. The mount is sideways in order to fit on the limited tank space. in other words the cam slides in from the side rather than front-to-back.

Used the longer (2" ?) extension connector from the mount to the cam housing.

Because its behind the windscreen you can use the open door instead of the solid one for better sound.
