Angry 1st service drama

So today i took my bike in for its first service & to get the rev limiter removed...what should of been a 2 hr service had taken 7hrs of waiting & then to be told that they could not remove the limiter because of a PC issue !
Apparently the software that the dealer uses connects to a main server in germany HQ was not conecting.....they have told me they need to keep the bike for a few days to have this removed, its all starting to sound a bit suss !!
Has anyone else come accross this problem ?

That sounds weird

My first service took 1 day(deliverd in the morning, got it back in the evening).

Somethings fishy here..you better check it out I would say..
Maybe the tech droppet it, and they need spare parts such as mirrors and more...

Hey mate, I had the same thing happen to me today, but was told the guy doing the service has only had 6 months in BMW and wasn't sure how to do it as it was his first one, and the computer was playing up, not words you really want to here coming from the chick at the front counter, as you could imagine, I wasn't happy.

I was also told they had to talk with the BMW rep, to see why it wouldnt reset, So I rang Morgan and Wacker where I brought the bike, So they called the place that it was getting serviced and 2hrs later, I go the call to come get my bike, mind you it was dropped in at 7:30am and it was picked up at 3:00pm.

So I would say you will get your bike soon, the thing your going to love is once the rev limiter is off, ohh man what a beast, it's mad how quick it is, any way I hope you get your bike back soon.

Regards.

not on the S1RR but on my 08 K1200GT on its 12k mile service when they did the software down load over the internet, BMW HQ gave my bike a corrupted file, all kinds of weird electrical **** started happening.

what was bad was the bike was going out of warranty in a few days ( for the3 year time limit here in the USA,I didnt even realize the date was approaching as I bought the bike used and never got the actual inservice date from my delaer when they sold it to me)

I was heading for a trip, the tires on the bike were good for the trip but not the trip + the aditional 250+ round trip ride down to the dealer so I hauled the bike down and back in in my trailer and after the service only ran the bike long enough to move it into the garage.
so on the Sunday morning I left on the trip the bike was now out of warranty (still unknown to me) and small things werent working,(ESA would switch from 2up to rider + luggage and windshield wouldnt move) bike ran great so I continued thinking I would call my dealer on tues morning. about 20 miles in I saw the warning triangle flash on then off (not asc just general warning) then the longer I rode the more random **** happened with the dash till by tues morning I had a rolling light show going on in front of me including the speedometer and tach needles swinging wildly. cruise criuse wouldnt stay engaged. but the heated seats and grips worked and the bike was running fine.

called the dealership and they told me it was a corrupted file and I wasnt the only one it happened to to take it to a shop local to me then and have them reflash and all would be well.

found a shop and went to and and it took them the rest of that day and most of the next to fianlly get it to accpet a new software download and get my bike acting right.

then the regional rep from BMW wouldnt agree to pay for the shop time so I had to pay the almost 700.00 to the dealership to get my bike back so I could continue my trip.

after over a month of trying to work thru the BMW regionalrep and customer service I finally got ahold of some high email addresses for BMW NA and sent a polite lengthy email outlining what had occured and how I had been treated . that day I got 2 phone calls and within 2 days got a check sent out to reimburse me.

so long story shortt and sorry for the semi hi jack but what they are telling you is plausible

That part is true... whether they could connect or not - don't know. If you know anyone with a GS911, you could borrow it and remove the limiter yourself.

That's a messed up story Karlb. I remember when that corrupted file came out. It was corrected--or noticed--quickly but as happened to you a few bikes were effected.
Sounds like a wacky deal that the rep would not cover the cost through BMW NA as it was their fault and occurred while under warranty. Possibly because you are not the original owner but still it was their fault. Possibly because the bill was $700. Why was it $700. Should only take half an hour to full hour to update software--okay maybe two if programming was corrupted and there was problems with the computer but problems with the computer should not be charged to a customer as work time. The dealer should take that hit.

Hind sight is 20/20 but you should have made sure who was paying before letting them have your bike. I am not saying it is your fault it happened. It sucks and glad it got straightened out. Eventually.

Sounds like BMW would have better service using the GS911 rather than their own proprietary software.

No kidding.

When I got mine, they told me they fried the dash LCD display with one update as they were too diligent to get it done quickly (their demo bike). The next day BMW told them to not apply the update. Too late. Dash was toast.

the bill was 700.00 for all the labor hours incurred no parts at all used.
the dealership the repair was done was over 200 miles from the dealership that did the original download so they needed to be paid for their work.
trying to get prior approval from BMW NA for the work wasnt in the cards as I would have been stuck with no way to go anywhere and would have just delayed getting my bike going, both my dealership and the repairing dealership felt BMW would and should cover this, it was just the regional rep refusing to agree or even say yes or flat out no, just flat stone walling and from what I was told he didnt think the bike was repaired and the problem would resurface (still hasnt thousands of miles and a year later) so instead of arguing I simply put the charge on my BMW visa and figurted if things got nasty I could fight it thru the credit service. thankfully once I got up the chain of cammand at BMW logic prevailed.

as to why the labor was so high. they started working on my bike shortly afternoon on a tues and could not get the bike to take the new download, tried everything and no joy, it would get hung up in the middle of it, even tried disconnecting the battery and grounding out the bikes system and letting it sit for an hour. no joy.
during this whole repair I was right with the technician(s) in the shop and they tried everything. at the end of that day they had opend a PUMA case and were talking to NA who was going to look at the files over night and make some reccomendations the next day. we left the bike unplugged and the battery disconnected overnight and the next morning the tech and I while wainting for NA to call back tried to download the softwware again and got past the point where it was hanging prior, but still had some minor issues occuring, they did the download and all updates and got them to take and then tested out the bike, it ended up being right at 8 hours labor between tues afternoon and wed morning.
as I said I am pleased with BMW for taking care of this and only take fault with the regional rep that was uncommunicative with me for a month, ]
having been a BMW rider and driver for a long time it was not what I had come to expect from BMW. and that experience did not give me touchy feel good thoughts when my S1RR munched its engine last fall, but BMW has restored my faith in them with how they handled that issue.
