Default 17000km's and an exploding clutch

My s1k is now up to approximately 17000 km's after being purchased at 6500 and a few days ago when I was on a ride with some mates the clutch started to slip. Got a mate who knows more then I to have a look and there was no free play so we adjusted it up and kept going. Little bit further down the road it started slipping again so we had another look and no free play. We adjusted it up again and I limped it home with it slipping reguarly.

I've since found out that the inside clutch fibre shattered and fell into the sump when the slipped activated. Also it took chunks out of the inner basket when it went... upon inspection the torn up basket appeared somewhat porous making me think of a possible miscast.

This happened within a week of having 2 headlight bulbs explode and take chunks out of the reflector... had that fixed under warranty. The experience has somewhat shaken my faith in BMW. My dealer has been taking care of me but I shudder to think of how much the clutch repairs are going to cost if warranty won't cover it... maybe I should have got a 1098... woulda been cheaper

Yes you should have got the 1098... It'd have nothing to do with the way you ride it?

I do ride hard from time to time but mostly I commute. Add to that it wasn't slipping at all until the night it went.

Latest update on my baby:

Pictures and clutch basket sent to BMW. Metal fragments possibly through the engine. Waiting to hear if they're replacing my clutch or my engine. Probably months until i get it back.

The clutch exploded in my R1200GS a while back and BMW had it for about 5 weeks. Within a week or two of getting it back the gearbox died and they had it another 4 weeks. You'd think they'd check the whole lot while they had it in their workshop for so long but they didn't.
It was all fixed under warranty but I wasn't a happy man missing 9 weeks of the British summer.

Sorry to here that, i think the clutches on our bikes are rubbish, my one rattles and clatters like an old tracktor...12000 miles covered...if it goes bang soon i will get the warranty cover i hope ?, after the warranty i`m considering an STM slipper, not for performance just for longevity....good luck

My clutch was ratteling as well and i took it in to the dealer in November. I was called last week with an update that they found numerous pieces of metal in the clutch cover side of the case. They have pictures into BMW to find out what step is next. I never did ask where they suspect the pieces came from. In May I had the cam shaft and chain replaced as well.
