Default 1199 Panigale vs S1000RR

The wet weight for the 1199 is around 415-420lbs with massive torque and maybe a little less hp than the S1000. The electronic package looks superior as well...im not even comparing the S1000 to the 1199 S model either which looks like it has the BMW's number.

Base model which is in the same price range looks like a good war is coming...depending on handling/brakes/etc I think the S1000 will win the ego's and maintenance catagory

Been there and done that Ducati thing. Wish I had the $30-40K back. Could have built a superbike for what that thing cost in parts and maintenance. (999 era machine). I realize they finally got rid of the belts--thank god. Do you know they set tension on those things by frequency? Seriously, do-it-yourself mechanics use a guitar tuner and pluck the belts. The dealer has a more sophisticated machine... that does the same thing!

The panagale with abs will be about $2500 more than the loaded bmw? I still dont think that bike will win the bike shootouts. The 1199s on the other hand should win but it will be 7k to 9k more than the bmw. I am sure the prices are quite right but hopefully close. Put an $2250 ohlins fork and shock kit on the bmw and it would win the shootout handsdown. I would love to have one but the high cost of maintenance drove me away. Almost put a deposit on one a few weeks ago and then I actually rode the bmw and bought one of those.

Should be interesting to see how the Panigale turns out.

Much more oversquare (1.84:1 vs. S1000RR 1.61:1 bore to stroke ratio) than any Duc before, which should mean higher redline, weaker midrange. The new Duc is so oversquare that the valve timing is pretty radical with lots of overlap to fill the broad flat combustion chamber that comes from having really big bore and short stroke. What will a Ducati be like if it isn't a midrange monster?

The move to chain drive for the cams will significantly reduce maintenance costs by lengthening intervals and eliminating belt adjustment and replacement costs. Given two cylinders instead of four, Ducati maintenance costs could finally become essentially the same as an inline 4.

Ducs, in particular modern Ducs are really pretty reliable in my experience. My 916 has over 54K on it.

Well, I have a Panigale 1199 Tricolore arriving in March 2012... I will still use my BMW as my everyday commute and long distance bike and the Panigale as my Weekend toy.

I guess if the Ducati isn't all it's cracked up to be, I can sell it and go the Ohlins route on my S1000RR...

I had a Ducati 998R that I LOVED! but it was in NO WAY suitable for my daily commute and it was massively uncomfortable. The 998R was completely reliable and I had zero issues with it.
