Default BMW S1000RR American pricing announced

BMW's new S1000RR superbike will retail at American dealerships at $13,800.

Expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships in December, the 2010 BMW S1000RR is priced to be competitive in the fierce literbike market segment. At $13,800, the American manufacturer suggested retail price is lower than the previously announced Canadian MSRP (US$14,800) and European MSRP (US$22,000).

BMW is also accepting pre-orders for the S1000RR through Dec. 31 at BMW Planet Power: The S1000RR Superbike.

"We have had tremendous interest in this bike since it was first unveiled in Monza earlier this year," says Todd Andersen, marketing manager for BMW Motorrad USA. "The S1000RR represents an entirely new dimension for BMW Motorrad and the sport bike segment. At this price, we expect a significant number of customers to take advantage of our pre-sale program. In fact, all of our first month’s production has already been sold through this program."

With a claimed power delivery of 193 hp and weight of 404 lbs, BMW calls the S1000RR the "most powerful production 1000cc sport bike in the world."

Optional features include a race antilock brake system with four settings, rain, sport, race and slick. BMW says its race ABS components weigh 5.5 lbs compared to the 20 lb ABS systems offered by its competitors.

S1000RR options are available at the following prices:
  • Motorsports Paint Scheme: $750
  • Race ABS: $1,000
  • Race ABS & Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) $1,480
  • Gear Shift Assistant: $450
  • Anti Theft Alarm: $395

That really put a hush on alot of the nay-sayers. Most were expecting a 20K+ base model.

I certainly wasn't a naysayer, but my interest was lukewarm expecting the bike to be priced out of range for what it is (cough, KTM). At this price, how could one not be interested? I will wait for reviews before plunking down my cash, but knowing BMW I am pretty confident this will be a great bike from the go. (cough, Buell).

Absolutely. For the technology in this motorcycle it is by far the best deal on the market. Lightest weight in the liter bike class aside from the CBR1000RR non-abs model. Which when you order with ABS adds a whopping 25 pounds and once it is there, it's there. No adjusting or turning off, you have ABS all the time, period. Between the 5.5 pound ABS, the Dynamic traction control, quick shift and all the other advanced goodies it is an absolute steal for the price. And for the track junkies there is a built in transponder that will pick up the signals from the track markers and you can actually plug into the computer that is under a panel on top of the tank and get dialed in exact lap times and a wealth of other information. I couldn't believe the low price even after the add-ons.

No doubt Snocompton, I agree with you!!! This thing is looking to be a serious slap in the face for the industry. I wouldn't really expect anything less form BMW, when they make a decision to take on a category, they do it right!!

Do you have any more iinfo on the lap timer/transponder feature?? I actually didn't know about that!

I don't know the exact features as I just got a quick rundown the other day. There is a small panel on top of the tank (only alluminum tank in the class by the way) that is accessed by a hand full of torx. Under that panel is a computer that you can plug in your lap top and have access. I didn't ask as many questions as I should have about it but I learned that it picks up markers on the track and retrieves exact lap times and what not. I can gather all the information on that this week though, as I would really like to know more about it as well.

Yeah, cause there would need to be an IR pickup that will get the signal from the S/F line. I highly doubt it would also do split times, but that would be pretty cool! Although, since they built the thing for racing, maybe it does have similar capabilities to the WorldSBK version, in which case it would have VERY advanced lap timing and data acquisition capabilities! Oh man, how sweet would it be if you could just install a GPS sesnor and have a built in GPS lap timer!??!?! Throttle position and braking pressure would be nice too! Not gonna happen, but wow... that would be sweet!

I'll get the answers for you for sure. It really wouldn't suprise me if it does have those capabilities. Almost everything about this bike is track oriented. Prep time is absolutely minimal. 2 10mm nuts and the mirrors are off, one torx and a quick disconnect and the turn markers are gone, four bolts and a quick disconnect and the rear plate/light assembly are off and the passenger pegs are gone with two torx. This is by far the most trackable bike from the factory that has been built.

Anybody know if this will come with an annoying LAMP warning when you disconnect the front signals and rear plate assembly or they were smart and accounted for that in the deficient light bulbs programming?

I'll find that out as well. Any photo requests? I have access to the bike for the next few days. I can snap some close ups of whatever if anyone is interested.
