Default 2009 BMW S1000RR

The newly unveiled S1000RR literbike from BMW is perhaps the most highly anticipated sportbike of 2009. Despite the German marquee’s somewhat stodgy reputation in the two-wheel world, BMW is jumping into a highly competitive pool of world-level roadrace competition.
We recently had the opportunity to sit down with the VP of BMW Motorrad USA, Pieter de Waal, unleashing a barrage of questions about the S1000RR and what it means to BMW as the historic company reinvents itself.

Much like Harley-Davidson, the ages of BMW riders keep rising. A few years ago the company decided it needed to appeal also to a younger, more adrenaline-driven audience. The affable de Waal explained how they are repositioning the brand closer to the car side of BMW – lighter, more exciting.

It began with the HP line of Boxer-powered high-performance bikes (the HP2 Enduro, HP2 Megamoto and HP2 Sport), then hit a new market with the “hard enduro” G450X dirtbike. Another new-to-BMW market will be served with the introduction of the S1000RR, which will tackle the intensely competitive Japanese literbike segment head on.

Actually I would say the new R1 with the crossplane crankshaft was the most anticipated, then the Aprillia V4, then the BMW. But overall, I think the BMW will blow everything out of the water when it is tested...

The R1 was highly anticipated because the Motor configuration came from Moto GP... more marketing than actual results (so far) for the average rider that doesn't have world level factory support. Watch any club level races, and Gixxers still dominate, cause out of the box they're the most competitive.

The RSV4 is no doubt one of the coolest and most advanced new bikes. And therefore highly anticipated... UNTIL one see's the $40k price tag. For most of us, it just becomes another bike that we would love to have, but can't afford (i.e. 1098R, 1198R, MotoCzsys, MV F4).... and if we did have it, we wouldn't dream or tracking it.

In my opinion, the S1000RR is the most highly anticipated bike for 2009/2010 for the following reasons:
+ BMW always takes racing seriously. This is their first foray into World SBK, and it's clear that they've made a GREAT start out of the gate. That means their engineers have taken it very seriously. Yes, Aprilia is doing well. They should, they've been racing bikes and winning championships for decades.
+ BMW already has the best proven ABS on the market. and it's light. like, really light!
+ The Bimmer is coming to the market with more HP's, less weight, traction control, Race ABS and a quickshifter for ~$15-16k.... only a few k's more than the japanese bikes.... and $25k less than the RSV4 or 1198R!!!

I'm #4 in line for a Silver S1000RR with ABS, DTC, and QS. As soon as the motor is "Broken in", the mirrors are coming off, Pirelli DOT's will go on, and this baby will frequent the Infineon, Laguna Seca, and Thunderhill Raceways! Can't wait!!
